Season seven began last night and tonight. There are about four or five that I was pretty impressed with so far, but time will tell. I am amazed every year at the great numbers of people who are dillusional when it comes to their belief that they actually are good singers. But there are singers (I use that term liberally) out there making millions who really have little to no quality voice. If not for great producing and packaging, these people would be on the street.
I deeply enjoy watching American Idol. I am not exavtly sure why, but I do. There are problems with the show. I think it is wrong to force all the contestants to sing certain styles of pop/rock. Not everyone can really do a hard rock style or disco, or soul, or R & B, or the Blues, or Jazz, etc… This makes the contest kind of unfair in my opinion. If someone is really only comfortable with one or two styles like country and pop ballads, they should be able to stick with those styles.
Also I have noticed that many times the arrangements of the songs the contestants do are really poorly done. This really affects the ability of the contestant to do his or her best and yet it is beyond their control. But that having been said, some who end up winning or make it in the top two or three seem to be the ones who are versatile enough to handle the many different styles thrown their way.
I get a real kick out of Simon, Paula, and Randy too. This is supposed to be a season offering much better talent than the past few seasons, but we will see. I look forward to seeing who ends up making it past the group singing and all to be a finalist.
